Skills for Life is a Charitable Trust founded to empower people with mental health issues. Our aim is to promote quality of life through effective and innovative mental health education. We want to support people away from the cliff edge, not join the stretcher bearers at the bottom.
Anyone can experience a mental health issue at any point in their life and need some help with understanding what they are experiencing and how to manage that experience.
We know that recovery is not all about being symptom-free, but about having the ability to rebuild a meaningful and satisfying life - recovery is what you define it to be!
Our learning programmes are developed to encourage choice and participation in opportunities which can assist recovery journeys.
Our courses have been produced by mental health and education professionals along with people with lived experience of mental health issues. They aim to provide:
• Knowledge about the experience of mental distress and gain a clearer understanding of how to improve your Recovery journey
• Skills to help you manage a mental health problem and look after your own wellbeing, as well as making life meaningful
• Opportunities to meet other people, who share your experience, open up new avenues for learning and make new choices possible.
We offer a range of courses for youth 13-17yr old, and adults around anxiety, depression, resiliency, peri/post natal depression, bipolar and self-esteem.
We are a registered charitable trust with donee status. Any donations over $5 can be used for tax credits at 33.33%.
Skills for Life Charitable Trust is based in Whangarei and delivers educational, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based, recovery courses for anyone that experiences mental health issues such as depression, panic/anxiety or low self esteem.
Anyone can experience a mental health issue at any point in their life and need some help with understanding what they are experiencing and how to manage that experience
Funds raised will be used to fund people into courses who may not qualify for funding elsewhere. We want to reduce barriers to access, particularly for youth. The funds would enable us to assist with either the full cost or part fund the cost of the course for the recipient.
Funds Required 13 November 2017
We are finding an increasing number of people unable to access funding creating a barrier to being able to chose CBT as a pathway to recovery. As we are not funded by a DHB, we rely on other government funds via PHO, MSD or ACC to fund clients on to courses. These are very limited or not appropriate for clients to access leaving them no choice but to try and fund this themselves or miss out. We don't want to add financial pressure onto families and individuals already in a stressed and mentally unwell state. Please donate now to provide people with an alternative option.
