We're on a mission to reduce the number of unwanted dogs and puppies by offering FREE desexing and microchipping across the Whangārei and Kaipara regions.

Now The Best Dog Trust, we started out as Ruakākā Dog Rescue, supporting the Ruakākā village community. Over the past 9 years, our mahi has grown — and so has our impact.

Desexing is the most effective way we know to break the cycle because there are too many puppies and not enough homes.

We step in to help where it’s needed most — reaching vulnerable dogs and the whānau who love them, but may be struggling to provide care.

What We Offer

• Free desexing & microchipping for community dogs

• Support for dog owners, including food, bedding, and kennels (as supplies allow)

We focus on dogs most at risk of being overlooked or left behind – especially larger breeds, black or brindle dogs, and those filling up the rescues and pounds.
