We arrange weekend nature walks for all members of the Dunedin community.
Otago
Wellness Walkers Trust was established to promote community health and wellbeing through nature walks in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Our volunteers work hard to increase social inclusion and build self-confidence in our community, while encouraging healthy low-impact physical activity. We have also been building collaborative relationships with other charities, like the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation and Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust, to provide better Wellbeing events and work on increasing access to Dunedin's beautiful nature.
All events are coordinated by volunteer Lisa Silva (Trustee), through our public Facebook page.
Donations will:
1) increase the safety and quality of the walks offered (e.g. first aid kits, UHF radios, tramping equipment, walking poles)
2) allow us to offer a wider range of walks to include those who are less mobile/able-bodied
3) assist with the cost of biannual award ceremonies and participation prizes for community walkers
4) allow us to reward participation in healthy eating challenges (e.g. 100 sugarfree days/junk free month) through spot prizes.
Wrapping up 2017 28 December 2017
As we wrap up the year, it is time to report back on our fundraising and equipment purchases for 2017, and send a big Thank You to all who have made our walks possible!
Thanks to support from Sport Otago and gold coin donations from all of our wonderful walkers, we can now provide these items at our walks:
⭐ First Aid kit
⭐ 2 x walkie-talkies (useful when faster walkers go on ahead)
⭐ 2 sets of walking poles (ideal for those who are finding the walk a bit steep or tricky, available from January)
⭐ 50+ SPF sport sunscreen (there for use by any walker)
We are also immensely grateful to those regular walkers who helped run the events this year, whether that meant leading walks, giving rides to others, making newcomers feel welcomed, or simply being supportive and helpful. You are all fabulous and we are so lucky to have you. ♥️
