Help us restore a lowland podocarp forest to Avoca Valley
Christchurch, Canterbury
The Summit Road Society has committed to restoring a dry lowland podocarp forest in Avoca Valley on the Port Hills. This forest ecosystem once naturally existed on this site, but is now nationally rare and threatened.
We are planting nearly 30,000 trees and plants this year thanks to generous support from the Department of Conservation (Jobs for Nature) and other funders. However we still have a shortfall to find hence why we are launching this Givealittle Page. We would love your support - every little bit counts.
You can also assist by coming to our public planting days. For more details see our website

By restoring the bush to the Avoca Valley catchment, we will create habitat and ecological corridors for native fauna, improve freshwater values, reduce erosion and sediment run-off, restore mahinga kai, provide recreational benefits for the community, and support carbon sequestration. The new bush is being covenanted with the QEII National Trust and protected in perpetuity.
The Summit Road Society (Inc.), formed in 1948, aims to further the vision of Harry Ell, by working to enhance, preserve and protect the nature, beauty and open character of the Port Hills for people to enjoy.
Money raised will be spent on planting and maintenance costs for Avoca Valley. Any surplus raised will be put towards our 2023 planting project.
