Help grow our trap library and save our natives

Canterbury

The Summit Road Society has launched an exciting initiative - Predator Free Port Hills.

Predator Free Port Hills is a backyard trapping programme for urban households. Our vision is to protect the native species of the Port Hills and to see their populations flourish in our lifetimes. Ultimately, we want the Port Hills to become predator free with thriving native wildlife in our neighbourhoods, local parks and reserves, farmland and bush areas.

To achieve this, we are working towards the goal of one trap in every five households within five years. We are targeting possums, ferrets, stoats, weasels and rats. These are some of the major predators of native birds and are easily caught in a small backyard trap. We are focusing on the urban fringe of the Port Hills, from Taylors Mistake to Tai Tapu, and the harbour from Lyttelton to Purau. In time this will help provide a buffer zone to Predator Free Banks Peninsula.

To achieve our goals, we need more funding. You can help!

• $50 will purchase one trap

• $100 will purchase two traps

• $200 will purchase four traps

• Any assistance you can provide, small or large, would be most appreciated.

The Summit Road Society provides traps on loan for households to trial trapping as well as subsidised traps for sale. This Givealittle page is raising funds to expand our trap library.

About us

The Summit Road Society (Inc.), formed in 1948, aims to further the vision of Harry Ell, by working to enhance, preserve and protect the nature, beauty and open character of the Port Hills for people to enjoy.

Use of funds

The money will be spent on humane traps for mustelids (stoats, weasels, ferrets), possums and rats. These traps are owned by the Summit Road Society and are provided on loan to households on the urban fringe of the Port Hills.
