Camp Twitch changes lives for kiwi kids living with the neurological disorder Tourette Syndrome. Please help us host Camp Twitch 2017.
Canterbury
Imagine life with no control over involuntary movements like unintentionally hitting yourself or others; or not being able to stop making noises or shouting out random words.
That is life with Tourette Syndrome.
Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder that presents in childhood.
The tics that are characteristic of Tourette Syndrome can impact on every aspect of a young persons life - socially, physically, academically and psychologically.
Many children with Tourette's experience bullying and say that they feel lonely, confused and isolated.
But at Camp Twitch those very tics are what helps to build a community; a commonality that so few people live with and that so few understand.
At Camp Twitch our children get to experience just being a child; to laugh, to smile, to tic and be themselves without the fear of being judged.
Camp Twitch helps to change lives, to build confidence in those who have shied away from others in the past and inspires young people to stand up and say 'I tic loud and I tic proud'.
Camp Twitch is happening again from October 2 to October 6, 2017.
My daughter was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome in 2013 at age nine. At the time we had no knowledge of Tourette Syndrome and had never met anyone else with the disorder.
A chance meeting with another mum with two children with Tourette Syndrome grew into an idea to bringing other families living with Tourette Syndrome together.
One year later and the first Camp Twitch was held with 97 from throughout New Zealand coming together to meet others just like them for the first time. The next camp in 2016 welcomed 109 campers and in 2017 we hope to welcome even more families to experience the magic that is Camp Twitch.
We offer peer support for children, adults and parents of those with Tourette Syndrome. We also administer a website and provide information services for those with TS as well as schools if necessary.
