Help Kiara have the chance to walk.
Leeston, Canterbury
When my granddaughter Kiara was born, we were told she would not survive. When she did, we were told we may only have months with her. No one thought she would ever breathe by herself, feed herself, crawl, talk or go to school, but she has. She’s our wee miracle. Now we want to help this strong, resilient, happy-go-lucky 8-year-old meet her next challenge: Walking
Kiara was born with a rare condition, Sonic Hedgehog syndrome (a partial duplication of the 7th chromosome), resulting in developmental delays and muscular disabilities and she also has hydrocephalus. By the time she was a week old, she had undergone 2 brain surgeries. Since then, she’s had eye surgeries, and 2 corrective hip surgeries, plus many other treatments. But Kiara remains happy and determined, exceeding every expectation set for her. Her condition is so rare, no one knows what lies ahead.
Kiara’s spirit has never been stronger as we fight for her future. We know this can work. The same therapy 7 years ago let her sit up and crawl.
To make this life-changing therapy possible, we need to raise $19,000 for treatment in Australia. We can’t get this at home and funding is not available . Every contribution, no matter how small, brings us closer to giving Kiara the gift of walking.
Thank you for reading our story. With your support, we can give Kiara the chance to walk. We appreciate any help you can offer, whether donating or sharing Kiara’s story. Help us make a difference. Her journey photos below.

IMPORTANT UPDATE 11 March 2025
We have extended the target and timeline due to a very exciting Donation that has been given to us by Kiwis Together. We are now able to put down a deposit for follow up therapy once Centre of Movement move to New Zealand at the end of the year. Without people like you all and charities like Kiwis together this would never have been possible in our wildest dreams. So from the bottom of our hearts we thank you. Watch out for updates once we head off on Kiaras first journey. We leave New Zealand for the Centre of Movement on 26th April for her 3 week intensive. <3
Thank you so much for finalising our goal and donating to help Kiara's dream. This is very much appreciated. <3
Thank you
