Raising funds to professionally preserve my great-grandfather Edward Campbell Evans’ self-portrait and honor his artistic legacy.
Auckland
My great-grandfather, Edward Campbell Evans, painted this self-portrait by looking at himself in a mirror. It’s a unique piece of our family history and shows his skill and character as an artist.
The painting has been in our family for decades, but the frame protecting it is over 20 years old and the surface of the painting shows signs of aging. To ensure it’s preserved for future generations, I’m raising funds for professional conservation and a museum-quality frame.
The total cost is $2410 which will cover:
•Stabilising and carefully cleaning the painting to prevent further cracking or damage
• Repairing areas of paint loss and restoring damaged sections of the portrait
• Strengthening and supporting the canvas for long-term preservation
• Replacing the damaged frame with a new, durable frame (to be arranged separately)
• Proper backing and protection to help preserve the painting for future generations
Any contribution helps me honor my great-grandfather’s legacy and keep this special artwork safe.
Even a small donation goes a long way in protecting this piece of family history.
Thank you for helping me preserve Edward’s artwork for future generations.❤️
All funds will go towards professionally conserving the painting, including stabilising the paint, carefully cleaning the surface, and repairing areas of damage.
It will also contribute to reframing the artwork in a high-quality, archival frame, with proper backing and long-term protective materials to help preserve it for future generations.
Update on Great Grandfather’s Portrait Restoration 26 March 2026
I wanted to share a quick update on my Great Grandfather’s portrait restoration.
I’ve now heard back from the restoration team, and they’ve confirmed that the repair work can go ahead. They’ve also let me know that framing isn’t included in their service, so that will need to be arranged separately once the restoration is complete.
Because of this, I’ve updated the total amount I’m hoping to raise so it better reflects the full cost of restoring and properly framing the portrait.
This piece means a lot to my family, and preserving it is really important to me. If you’re able to support or even just share the page, it would honestly mean so much.
