We need help to fund a van to transport refugee kids to an education support programme.
Waikato
When refugee families come into NZ, their children are often young. These kids have had very little formal education in the camps in the holding countries. Their parents are extremely thankful for the free education offered here in NZ. But if you look at it from the child’s point of view, it’s a pretty tough road they’re on. Most of the other children in their class have no idea about what they’ve been through. The classrooms are full and the teachers do the best they can, but it’s hard enough getting through the curriculum. There is no English spoken at home, and the parents are struggling to understand the ways things are done in NZ. This is where ROC comes in.
We are an accredited support service for refugee children. We give them extra tuition in maths and English, and also teach them social skills, often working one to one. However our biggest challenge is getting these kids from their school to our programme, and home again afterwards. We need a van, instead of relying on volunteers and their vehicles. And this is where you can make a big difference. The kids love the programmes (we run two), we get huge support from volunteers and contributing schools, but lack of transport means that a lot miss out.
Can you help us?
ROC Trust has become a strong pillar of support to refugees from 9 countries for 19 years. We encourage a culture of acceptance, love, and growth, so that former refugees can become self-sufficient and independent in Aotearoa New Zealand.
The money will be spent on to buy a used 11 seater van to carry the kids for the programmes.
Continuing the efforts 11 August 2023
Thanks to the support of many donors, we've managed to purchase an 8-seater van, to fill the immediate need for transport. However, our long-term goal is still to purchase a 10-seater for the After School programme
We are so grateful to everyone who has already donated to this goal
