Jango was surrendered to Chance 4 Change on the 3rd of February with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), which was causing him to intermittently regurgitate his meals and even water.
When Jango arrived, he was underweight with pale gums, having dropped from his pre-sickness weight of 10.5kg to just 8.1kg. Despite continuing a low-fat kibble as recommended by his previous owner, the regurgitation persisted, so he was taken straight to the vet for further investigation.
Blood tests revealed that Jango was anaemic and low in iron, meaning his body wasn’t producing enough healthy red blood cells. He also showed signs of inflammation, changes in liver levels, and abnormal thyroid results. It was clear that his health challenges went beyond GERD alone.
He was immediately started on medication to calm his stomach and control the vomiting, while Go Raw Pet Food NZ prepared a carefully balanced raw diet to support his nutrition and help address his anaemia. The vets’ plan was to monitor his response closely and repeat blood tests in three weeks to track his progress.
Since then, Jango has shown some encouraging stretches - going up to five days without regurgitating - followed by the occasional episode where clear fluid is brought up following meals. But, we haven’t yet seen improvements in his weight or energy levels. For this reason, Jango is returning to the vet for chest and abdominal X-rays, along with repeat blood tests.
