Where dogs with medical needs get a voice - and a second chance.
Wellington, Porirua City
Nova arrived from the pound heavily pregnant, and only days later gave birth to 11 puppies. Sadly, two were stillborn.
Although it appeared her labour had finished, by Thursday afternoon Nova began bleeding and became distressed. We rushed her and her newborns to the vet, where an X-ray revealed two more puppies still inside her and positioned well away from the birth canal.
After receiving oxytocin and calcium to restart her active labour, Nova delivered both remaining puppies at the clinic. Despite resuscitation efforts, sadly only one survived.
In total, Nova delivered 13 puppies, with 10 surviving.
It is clear Nova has had multiple litters in the past, and her mammary glands are now significantly enlarged and deformed. With 10 hungry puppies to feed, we have made the decision to bottle-feed two to reduce the pressure on Nova and help ensure all of her puppies receive enough nutrition.
Nova’s unexpected emergency vet visit came to $487.50. We would be incredibly grateful for any donations towards this cost as we continue caring for Nova and her 10 little survivors.
Chance 4 Change is a not-for-profit rescue based in Wellington. We give dogs from private surrenders and pounds a second chance at life. Through our network of foster carers and volunteers, we help each dog heal, grow, and find a loving forever home.

NOVA & HER BABIES – 19 DAY UPDATE! 13 October 2026
Can you believe these gorgeous babies are officially 19 days old?! Just look how much they've grown!
Their tiny eyes are starting to open, they're finding their feet and beginning to toddle around. It's such a special stage to watch!
Sadly, we also have some heartbreaking news to share. Despite our very best efforts, we lost one of our precious bottle-fed puppies to fading puppy syndrome. We tried everything we could to give him a fighting chance, including reuniting him with Nova, but sadly, he passed away peacefully, snuggled under his mum's arm.
Following his passing, our little blue-collar boy has rejoined his littermates, bringing Nova's total to nine beautiful, growing puppies.
Through it all, Nova continues to be the most incredible mum. She's doing such a wonderful job caring for her babies, and we're continuing to keep a close eye on her mammary glands to make sure she's staying healthy and comfortable.
We'd also like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated to Nova's Givealittle page! Thanks to your incredible kindness and generosity, we managed to raise enough funds to completely cover the cost of her emergency vet visit. We are so grateful to everyone who rallied behind this little family when they needed it most.
