Shade's Second Chance

$2,605 of $2,250 goal
Given by 19 generous donors in 21 days

A place to follow Shade's recovery, celebrate his milestones, and support his journey towards a happy, pain-free life.

Masterton, Wellington

When Shade was surrendered to Chance 4 Change, we were told he had no interest in working on the farm. It didn't take long to realise there was likely a reason why.

From his very first day with us, it was clear something wasn't right. Shade walked differently, sat differently, and seemed uncomfortable, so we arranged a veterinary appointment.

The incredible team at South Wairarapa Veterinary Services confirmed our fears. X-rays revealed severe bilateral hip dysplasia.

Despite the severity of his condition, Shade has remained an incredibly stoic boy. He has taken everything in his stride, never letting his pain define his gentle, affectionate nature.

Yesterday (30 June), Shade underwent the first of two femoral head ostectomy surgeries. He spent the night at the clinic receiving intravenous fluids, pain relief, and close monitoring as he began his recovery.

His first surgery alone will cost more than $2,000, and with a second operation still to come, we desperately need your help.

Every donation, no matter how big or small, will go directly towards giving Shade the pain-free future he deserves. Thank you for helping us give this beautiful boy a second chance.

It's time for a Shade update!  23 July 2026

We're so excited to share that Shade is recovering like an absolute champion!

His veterinary team are incredibly happy with his progress. His surgical wound is healing beautifully, and best of all... he's already using his operated leg! Seeing him becoming more comfortable every day has been amazing, and we couldn't be happier with how he's doing.

We also want to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who donated to Shade's Givealittle page. Thanks to your incredible generosity, we exceeded our fundraising goal! Every dollar raised will go directly towards Shade's veterinary bills, including helping fund his next surgery.

A very special thank you also goes to Corporate Cleaners, who generously donated $2,120 towards Shade's FHO. Your support has made an enormous difference and has helped ease the financial burden of his operation.

Shade still has a journey ahead of him, but thanks to the kindness of this incredible community, he's one step closer to living the happy, pain-free life he deserves.

From the bottom of our hearts - thank you for believing in Shade. We can't wait to continue sharing his progress with you all.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
