Please dig deep to support the people of Myanmar so that they can keep resisting the murderous military takeover.
International
On 1 February 2021, the Myanmar military staged a shocking coup d'état, and detaining members of the country’s democratically-elected ruling party. Overnight, the people of Myanmar had their worlds shattered.
The military’s response is increasingly brutal and violent. First, trying to stifle the people of Myanmar's voices by shutting down the internet and unregistering independent media outlets and arresting reporters. Now, they're hunting down opposition leaders, protestors, healthcare workers and media personnel by day. They're also using sheer force to crack down on peaceful protests. Officially, just under 300 people have been killed, unofficially we know it's far greater.
One hope we have is that the people of Myanmar have thrown themselves into a civil disobedience movement (CDM) on a massive scale. Starting in early February, people across all walks of life have refused to go to work in an effort to starve the military of the workforce necessary to achieve their cruel takeover. Now, workers are being physically forced or coerced to return to work but people are defying orders even if it puts their lives at risk. We're talking everyone from bank managers, teachers and doctors to tax collectors, railway workers, and the people who make your running shoes in factories, everybody.
The people of Myanmar are overwhelmingly committed to peace, committed to democracy and refuse to be silent. The three-fingered salute has become a sign of the resistance movement and it’s working, the strikes are crippling the military government. However, they need our help. As resilient as they are, they can’t strike indefinitely without financial support and food on the table. This is where Kiwis like you and me can help.
This is a bonafide page set up by people who know the country well and love it. Every last drop of your donation is given directly to people (those on strike, those who have had their homes torched, or have fled) and organisations (free ambulance and funeral services) who need it most. Please support.
People who have very recently returned to NZ from Myanmar due to security concerns. We have seen the best and now worst of that wonderful country and now it's our time to give a little back to a place that has given us more than can be put into words.
Providing financial support to those participating in the civil disobedience movement (CDM) who most need it; free ambulance and healthcare services; free funeral services; those who have fled their homes from targeted violence.
End of year update and thank you's 30 December 2021
Kia ora, hello, to our friends (old and new!) in New Zealand and abroad.
It’s been an immeasurably difficult year for many, I hope you’ve got your feet up somewhere, and enjoying some peace and quiet with loved ones before ’22 kicks in.
This is long overdue really but we want to send a quick update to sign off the year on a positive note, and so that people are aware of where their generous donations have been distributed, and so you understand the impact that your donation(s) has had in Myanmar.
Firstly, we are still so blown away and grateful for your support of Myanmar and our fundraiser. In addition to the 143 people who gave so generously to our Givealittle page, we were also thrilled to receive additional funding outside of this fundraising window, all of which brought our tally to approx. $45,000.
Your generosity supported the following:
- Large amounts towards medical products and services across Myanmar - vaccinations, food, operating and birthing tables, malaria and anti-malaria support, surgical and birthing instruments, sanitary products, blankets and clothes, mobile medical units and transport costs
- One young man’s emergency operation costs to reattach two limbs after being shelled by the military
- Basic salary, food and bedding, sanitary and medical provisions for people participating in the civil disobedience movement
- Shelter, dry food and cooking goods, sanitary products, diapers, anti-malarials and antibiotics, and medical and cleaning kits for internally displaced persons (IDP) camps
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), COVID-19 tests, isolation sheeting for COVID-19 management.
In addition to your generous donations, we cannot fully state how significant your advocacy has been for those in Myanmar. Sadly, people of Myanmar continue to face immense challenges and an uncertain future. Horrifying massacres, missing persons, significant economic hardships amidst acute economic instability, institutional breakdown, and staggering COVID numbers continue, to name a few. If you wish to better understand the issues, or to donate again, please do check out what the good people over on https://www.isupportmyanmar.com/ are donating to. Similarly, Myanmar chef and author Mi Mi Aye has put together a list of petitions and other simple actions to support the cause, at linktr.ee/meemalee.
Ngā mihi nui, thank you again. We’re so grateful for your support. Happiest of holiday wishes to you all.

Very much appreciate your hugely impactful donation. This really makes a splash for those participating in the civil disobedience movement, needing urgent ambulance services or (tragically) struggling to bury their loved one. Thanks again for your time and support!
Thank you very much for your support! Your contribution really makes a difference to those receiving it. All the best and thanks again.
Thanks so much, Mo! You know how far this goes on the ground so we'll spare you the detail but please know how much we appreciate the support. All the best, and please keep safe and strong across the border!
