What is Cerebral Palsy? Through World Cerebral Palsy Day 6 Oct 2017, we want to raise public awareness. Learn, share and give a little....
Nationwide
There are 17 million people with Cerebral Palsy Worldwide.
Statistics indicate Cerebral Palsy in New Zealand in around 2.0 - 2.5 per 1000 live births. Over 7000 people in New Zealand have some degree of Cerebral Palsy.
Cerebral Palsy or 'CP' is a congenital disorder of movement, muscle tone or posture. It is the most common physical disability in childhood. CP can affect different parts of the body. At least two thirds of children with CP will have movement difficulties affecting one or both arms. Almost every daily activity will be impacted.
We are an Early Intervention Service supporting children from birth - 6 years of age. We see the benefit of very early intervention for children born indicating additional needs.
Our team supports children with Cerebral Palsy and their parents / whanau, providing therapy, education, information, support and equipment.
We offer specialised programmes for Intensive Hand Function (hemiplegic), Parent and Child (Early Arrivals), and KidsGym1:2 for children 5 - 12 years with mild to moderate physical needs.
Through World Cerebral Palsy Day, we want to raise the public awareness of the affects of cerebral palsy and support for infants, children and families.
Conductive Education Waikato Trust was formed in November 1991 by a group of families who sought additional support for their children. The children were diagnosed with a range of physical disabilities, and sometimes additional cognitive/sensory impairments, due to neurological injury occuring before, during or after birth. This inhibited the children's engagement in day to day activities, including family life and learning.
The families learnt of an approach that taught children new skills (habilitation) toward achieving levels of independence. Following a visit to the Peto Institute in Hungary, Conductive Education was brought to New Zealand.
Conductive Education programmes continue to be provided for children in the Waikato region under this Charitable Trust, and parents continue to govern and advocate for other families and children to achieve provision of a high quality early intervention service.
Your donation will help our service to extend our support for children as early as possible and fund additional equipment for use in our centre and in the family home.
Funds will be used to continue access to the additional therapies that we offer for children affected by cerebral palsy. We need to ensure that new knowledge and therapies are integrated into our programmes and resources are available for use in therapy.
