I am revising my PhD dissertation with an academic press to publish it as a scholarly book. The significant revisions needed to transform the dissertation into a scholarly book will require one full year of work. I have a carrel at a library, so I have access to the book and archives. My ongoing research puts the history of evangelical reform and savvy business practices at the center of the American evangelical print culture of the "Benevolent Empire" during the Early Republic. Headquartered in New York City, the Benevolent Empire produced a print culture and empowered a missionary auxiliary movement that stretched across the Atlantic into cities like Auckland, New Zealand.
Print Culture in New York details the strategies and leadership of the great national charity publishing societies that promoted a variety of characteristics of benevolence and reform that impacted the Empire City during the growing tensions over ethical and moral standards for a new nation. It places the charity publishing societies and the lives of the benevolent elite at the center of early antebellum reform as the city emerged as the nation’s leader of economic, social, and institutional life.
