We want to build our own fulltime improvised comedy theatre and training institute in Auckland.
Auckland
The Covert Theatre company is on a mission to create a vibrant home for fun and creativity in Auckland. We aim to do this by having our own improvised comedy venue that will be a breeding ground for Kiwi talent through our fulltime training institute and performance venue.
We want to bring the life skills that improvisation teaches through play such as confidence, collaboration, creativity, resilience, mindfulness to our city's youth and community. The Covert has been producing shows and community workshops for 15 years and has grown to the point where it needs its own home. This will allow us to run school programs and holiday programs and provide a pathway for young people to get into the performing arts.
We have a community-centric philosophy,'from grass roots to tall shoots' and welcome everyone. Improvisation is considered one of the most accessible art forms in the world and it is a wonderful vehicle for people of all ages to facilitate self-creation, self-discovery and self-expression - plus it is a truckload of FUN!
We're looking to build our own venue. We have found a space in Ponsonby and want to create a 120-seat theatre with a 40-seat studio. A place you can watch world-class improvised comedy shows in the vein of TV's Whose Line Is It Anyway or do a workshop to enhance skills and bring more fun and laughter into your life.
We are dedicated to bringing more laughter and play into the world and we are greatly appreciative of your support!
We've got over 50 people in the Covert and we're growing. In a world of digital technology we're seeing more people needing to take time to connect and play. The Covert stands for fun, education, high quality and support.
The Covert Theatre's purpose is to enhance human connection through play. We do this by running NZ's only improvised comedy theatre in Ponsonby, Auckland. We're an 86-seat theatre with an Improv School using play to teach vital life skills to people from ages 8 to 88.
We have workshops Monday to Wednesday and shows Thursday to Sunday. We run after school programs, school holiday programs, improv for autism workshops and create a safe place for our tamariki to self-create, self-discover and self-express. Improv imparts crucial life skills such as creative thinking, connection, collaboration and builds confidence and resilience all through play. We are community in spirit and professional in standards. We are home to the world champions of improv The Improv Bandits and produce high quality shows on a weekly basis. We bring more fun, laughter and vibrancy to our community.
We have over 100 members and are a breeding ground for Kiwi creative talent and look to inspire the current and future generations of NZ actors, comedians, writers, directors and producers.
We create our own income to survive and rely on the generosity of the community to thrive.
Thank you!
