Samaritans is a non-religious confidential telephone support service operating 24/7 for people who may be feeling depressed or suicidal.
Samaritans are committed to the values of listening, confidentiality, helping people to make their own decisions, being non-judgemental and giving people emotional support when they most need it.
Our volunteers have been providing this invaluable service to everyone who needs it since 1965. Wellington Samaritans take over 30,000 calls per year.
Samaritans provides a confidential helpline for those who may be feeling depressed, lonely, or suicidal.
Every year more than 500 New Zealanders die by suicide. We know our service can help before it's too late.
That's why Samaritans are there to listen to any problem - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
The Wellington Samaritans centre opened in 1965 and celebrated fifty years of continuous service in 2015. Over the last year Samaritans trained 55 new volunteers and answered over 30,000 calls from people who felt they had no one else to talk to.
Samaritans receives no government funding. It's your donations that keep our phone lines open.
The income we receive from donations goes towards paying the phone and utilities charges required to run our 24/7 call centre and towards increasing our most valuable resource: trained volunteer listeners.
Thank you for your support. It means so much to Samaritans volunteers and most importantly to our callers and their families.
