Urgent - please help! ARNNZ latest rescue mission is a mammoth task and one that is going to cost us well over $1200!

Otago

On Friday afternoon I was contacted by a very upset and desperate old lady from Port Chalmers who had been trying to find help to catch and desex the wild cats on her property for over a year. At first, it was just one pregnant mumma cat she was feeding but one soon became many and, whilst she managed to feed them so that they did not go hungry, she knew their proper care was beyond her means and so made phone call after phone call to the animal organizations she believed would help and the council departments she thought would be obliged to. But sadly she was always met with the same reply - it was not their problem and she would have to ring a pest control company to destroy the cats; cats who never asked to be homeless and hungry and who, if it were not for irresponsible owners in the past, would never have become a problem in the first place. She is an old lady who does not have the internet and had never heard of ARNNZ, and had almost given up hope when fortunately somebody showed her an article about us in the local paper and she rang. I went to see her yesterday and found 10 young adult cats and 7 kittens living in the bushes surrounding her property. She has done an amazing job caring for them as all are well-fed and in excellent health but, unfortunately last year kittens are now too old to tame. However, this dear old lady is happy to continue feeding them all as long as they don't keep multiplying and so we have agreed to step in and TNR (trap, neuter, return) but now need to raise the funds to desex, vaccinate, worm and de-flea all 10 of these cats and tame, desex and rehome kittens. We have already trapped one - a beautiful ginger and white boy, whom one of our supporters named Sunny - and will be trapping the others for TNR over the next few days. However, even with the discounted vet costs we receive from the wonderful Verona at Mosgiel Vets, this mission is going to cost us well over a $1200 but, unlike the other organizations this old lady contacted for help, we have no choice but to help and will not turn her and these cats away. We have set up an emergency Givealittle fund and, if you can help, please do as every dollar really does count and will be very gratefully received. But if you are unable to spare a few dollars, then please at least consider sharing this post so that others who see it might donate and hopefully we can raise the funds needed. And as always, thank you - for without you and your generosity there is no way that we could help so many in such desperate need.

Cat Rescue Dunedin's involvement (page creator)

My name is Ana and I'm a founder of Animal Rescue Network New Zealand. Me and my friends saw a need to start animal rescue group in Dunedin and in January 2015 began trapping, neutering, and re-homing kittens and cats. We soon became aware of the scale of the stray cat problem in the city. ARNNZ became an incorporated charitable trust in June 2015. ARNNZ is committed to reducing the stray cat overpopulation using two approaches: 1. TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return), kittens under the age of 8 weeks can be socialized and re-homed. 2. Educating the community about the consequences of not de-sexing their pets. ARNNZ relies on donations to carry out this work and we do this without any premises. All of our rescues are fostered in private homes by volunteers.

About us

In January 2015 Cat Rescue Dunedin was formed by a small group of Dunedin residents who had seen the need for someone to begin helping the wild-born and abandoned cats and kittens living on the streets of Dunedin.

We became a charitable trust in June 2015, and since then we have desexed and rehomed hundreds of kittens which would otherwise have been left to breed uncontrollably. We were formerly known as the Animal Rescue Network NZ.

We are committed to reducing the wild-born and stray cat population through a combination of TNR and adoption.

Cats which are unable to be socialized to live with people can be humanely managed by a process known as trap, neuter, return (TNR). This means that the cats are desexed and returned to their environment where a caretaker feeds and monitors the cats to ensure their continued wellbeing. Desexing the cats ensures that their numbers don't increase, and over time the colony size reduces naturally.

Our long-term aim is to have our own shelter but until then all of our cats and kittens are fostered in private homes until they are ready for adoption.
