Help us help this group of cats and kittens who desperately require vet treatment and desexing.
Otago
A few days ago, one of our supporters received a call about a sick kitten. When she arrived at the house, she found there were lots of kittens. The sick one she had been called to see was very sick and she rushed it straight to the vets, who said it had a very bad case of cat flu. It was dehydrated and was undernourished - sadly this can be a tragic side effect of cat flu, difficulty swallowing and losing their sense of smell and the desire to eat. In the end, the decision was made that the kindest act the vet could do for this kitten was to put it to sleep However, when the lady returned to the house to check on the others, she was told another sick kitten had already passed, and also there was one which had been hit by a car and was walking funny.
She contacted the local animal rescue but they said they would only take in some of the remaining cats and kittens at that house if the lady rescuing them paid a surrender fee - which she simply couldn't afford to do for so many cats and so, instead, contacted us. We are now taking the remaining cats and kittens from this house into our care to vet check, treat, and - where possible - socialize and rehome; but we urgently need your help to cover the costs this will involve. If you can help in any way, however small, it would be greatly appreciated.
Every dollar counts and these poor babies didn't ask to be born. In fact, when the lady asked the owner of the cats how their situation had spiralled so badly out of control, she was told that they had taken in a female kitten a couple of years before, who they had not desexed and who had then fallen pregnant and given birth to 5 kittens; four of whom were female and who, again, they could not afford to desex... and soon kittens were having kittens These people now realize how important desexing is but the situation is well beyond their control, which is why we have agreed to step in. On behalf of the kittens and cats coming into our care, thank you for any help you are able to give
ARNNZ is a registered charity dedicated to helping the stray and abandoned cats living on the streets of Dunedin. Along with our dedicated team of volunteers we rescue, rehabilitate, desex and rehome hundreds of cats and kittens each year.
In January 2015 Cat Rescue Dunedin was formed by a small group of Dunedin residents who had seen the need for someone to begin helping the wild-born and abandoned cats and kittens living on the streets of Dunedin.
We became a charitable trust in June 2015, and since then we have desexed and rehomed hundreds of kittens which would otherwise have been left to breed uncontrollably. We were formerly known as the Animal Rescue Network NZ.
We are committed to reducing the wild-born and stray cat population through a combination of TNR and adoption.
Cats which are unable to be socialized to live with people can be humanely managed by a process known as trap, neuter, return (TNR). This means that the cats are desexed and returned to their environment where a caretaker feeds and monitors the cats to ensure their continued wellbeing. Desexing the cats ensures that their numbers don't increase, and over time the colony size reduces naturally.
Our long-term aim is to have our own shelter but until then all of our cats and kittens are fostered in private homes until they are ready for adoption.
Provide vet treatment and desexing of the cats and kittens; provide food, flea and worm treatment.
