A multi year project to fund the re-roofing and maintenance of key huts on the Dusky Track, a premier multi-day New Zealand tramping trip.

The 7 huts on the Dusky Track are now more than 50 years old and many now have developed maintenance issues that are in need of a substantial reinvestment to protect the huts for future recreational enjoyment. Some of these huts need to be re-roofed to rectify leaking issues on these buildings. The Backcountry Trust has started a multi year funding campaign working with volunteer groups to fund this major project but is in need of additional funds to help what will be one of its most costly single projects.

Use of Funds:

Funds will be used for Materials and transport for re-roofing Loch Maree Hut and Spey Hut.

“Dusky is legendary, done it three times. Don't let those huts die.”
“Ten years ago i walked this track. It's fabulous, and it's a delight to see the Trust doing the maintenance, but sad DoC can't find the funds. Perhaps under a new government things will improve for these nearly forgotten walks. Next phase could be some boardwalks, particularly in the upper Seaforth above Loch Maree.”
“I tramped the Dusky in December 2017 on an organized expedition from my university in the US. Seven friends and I had an amazing 9 days on the Dusky, and I'd love to return one day. Thank you for protecting these huts for future generations.”
“Keep up the good work team!”
“Great track - loved it !!”
“We loved the Dusky and support any efforts to keep the track open.”
“Such a worthwhile project. Thanks to everyone who makes the effort”
“Did this trek in 1990. Extreme flooding forced me to return to Lake Roe hut and get the fire lit to dry all my gear after walking neck deep in flood water. 2 days later, v deep snow on Centre Pass. Still the biggest solo outdoor adventure of my life!!”
“Let’s get these huts back into a condition we can be proud of. Thank you backcountry trust, you & DOC do a wonderful job of maintaining our backcountry huts & track networks. We live in a marvellous country!”
“Great work.”
