Free baby clothing is available to anyone who comes to Greenstone Doors, no questions asked. Sometimes it is for an unexpected pregnancy where mama and pēpē are not in a position to get what they need. At other times it is to ease the financial strain on the whānau .
Often it is re-gifted and whānau require the next size to cater for a growing child. Pre loved clothing and equipment is donated by the public and sorted by volunteers. Knitters, quilters, dressmakers all give their time and skills create beautiful garments and blankets. Even the newborn packs are made lovingly with recycled materials by volunteers. Conversations are important too when whānau come to get what they need and referrals are made for additional support where needed. Perhaps they need counselling, a social worker, food or a listening ear.
Providing professional care and practical support in pregnancy and beyond - baby clothing, support groups, fathering programmes, free counselling. Greenstone Doors provides a 'safe place to talk.'
This service comes at a cost - building leases in Lower and Upper Hutt, coordination of volunteers, advertising, and networking with social services to ensure the clothing reaches those in need. It costs approx $30,000 per year to provide this service.
