Young orphan foals

Two Little Lives That Need Our Help

During this week's Kaimanawa horse muster, two young foals with an estimated age of about 6-8 weeks were found without a mare to care for them. It appears they may have been orphaned for a week or two before being brought into the yards with a band of other horses.

Although they were among other mares and foals in the yards, they were being pushed away, standing alone, and unable to access the nutrition they desperately needed. The veterinarians on site were concerned and advised that without immediate intervention, including foal milk replacement and proper nutrition, the foals were unlikely to survive much longer.

Kaimanawa Heritage Horses (KHH) immediately decided to place the foals under our welfare umbrella. Within hours, arrangements were made to put both foals onto a truck that had other horses from the muster that had homes to go to. They were then transferred to one of our experienced welfare horse carers where they are now receiving the round-the-clock care they need and a friendly mare to keep them company in the stable. All money raised will go towards their ongoing care for the months ahead.

Once they get through this critical period and are a healthy weight and size for their age they will be able to find a permanent home.

About us

Annually the population of wild Kaimanawa horses is reduced to 300 by aerial mustering. We search for suitable homes for these horses, rehoming as many as possible.

Use of funds

Foal milk, special nutritional horse feed, rugs, hoof care and vet care.

Six days from the muster   11 June 2026

The foals are now spending time in a small paddock and enjoying some bailage along with the foal milk replacement, chaff and additives for health.

They look much happier, have tried on their new covers and look to be on the way to gaining strength and growing.

Thank you so much to all those who have been very generous with their donations to go towards the care of the foals. The feed, training, grazing and vet bills soon add up and it is so nice to see that so many supporters are following their progress.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
