An event to support families raising children with extra and special needs. All funds raised go towards creating safe spaces and places.
Porirua, Wellington
On the 1st April 2023 at 8am, Āhuru Mōwai Trust Chairman Paul Latham made his first walk up Rangituhi, in Porirua as he started the inaugural 'A Mountain To Climb' (AMTC) Challenge.
The challenge was to walk up Rangituhi (over 700 steps) each day for the month of April at 8am. If successful, the total distance climbed would exceed the height of Mt Everest.
The purpose of the AMTC was to raise awareness and funds for the work that Āhuru Mōwai Trust does in supporting families with children who have extra and special needs.
Not only was the Challenge completed by Paul, over 300 people joined him on one or more days throughout the month and over $12,000 was raised.
"It was humbling to see the wider community come out in force to support the first AMTC, and the work we do in the Community for families who literally have a daily 'Mountain To Climb' raising their families with extra and special challenges" said Paul Latham.
The purpose of the Āhuru Mōwai Trust is to create safe spaces and places that enrich the lives of families with children who have extra and special needs. Places where they find acceptance, respite and support for the whole family.
Funds raised this year will support Āhuru Mōwai Trust and it's regular provision of safe spaces and places including two projects underway in 2025. An inclusive outdoor play space and supporting a 3 week Pop-Up Clinic in Porirua, hosted by NAPA in August.
