Supporting families raising children with extra and special needs. Helpiing them find support, take a breath and exhale

Porirua, Wellington

SOCKtober (October) is pretty special on our calender, but this year it's even better when we get to host the Parliamentary Sports Trust for a game of Netball and Rugby! All for a good cause and that's us.!

The Āhuru Mōwai Trust was established in 2016 by Mandy and Paul Latham to support families who have children with extra and special needs. The main way in which the Trust supports these families is to create safe spaces and places where they can engage in quality family time outside of the home.

The Latham’s have firsthand experience in some of the challenges that families face having raised a family with a son who is Autistic. They were also aware of the gaps in the support families received and had some ideas on how they could plug a gap or two.

The Trust has been providing regular sensory sessions at a local indoor playground located in Porirua, called Awesome Bounce since 2018, these sessions have proved popular with families travelling from as far as Upper Hutt to attend. In any given evening there can be up to 30 individuals in attendance.

The AMT is a registered charity and is 100% voluntary. As the services and needs have grown the Trust has undertaken it's own fundraising campaigns throughout the calendar year. In October the Trust sells charity socks, aptly renaming the month to SOCKtober, “you might not be able to walk a mile in their shoes, but you can wear some socks to show your support”.
