Statistically, animals are more likely to enter shelters from low socioeconomic areas
Auckland
as owners are often unable to afford to have their companion pets spayed and neutered. Furthermore, they often do not have the means to care for any puppies or kittens that are born unexpectedly and inevitably these animals end up in the shelter system.
Accidents happen when they are least expected and spay / neuter is perfect birth control. Accessible and affordable spay / neuter programmes represent the most effective solution to this problem.
67,000 puppies can be born from a female dog and her offspring in seven years, and 420,000 kittens from a female cat and her offspring in just six years.
Given the geometric progression of population growth, every animal we fix today saves tens, then hundreds, then thousands of animals from our shelter system of tomorrow and every dollar spent today saves taxpayers from far greater expense in the future.
You can help end unnecessary suffering by having your animal spayed or neutered and by encouraging others to do the same.
Together we have the power to create a consensus which rejects killing as a method of achieving results. Please help support our efforts to bring about change.

The project also promotes an educational programme on the importance and benefits of desexing, and about an owner’s obligations (health and well-being) to their pets.
