Engaging local young people in replanting 20,000 mangroves along the southern coastline and estuaries of Papua New Guinea.
Nationwide
As part of our ARO response the Praxis team are supporting the vision of Roy (aka ‘Mangrove Man’) to engage local young people in replanting 20,000 mangroves along the southern coastline and estuaries of Papua New Guinea.
Mangroves store large amounts of carbon, they are also a breeding ground for wildlife and protect the coastline from storm surges, more info here: https://theconversation.com/mangroves-protect-coastlines-store-carbon-and-are-expanding-with-climate-change-81445 . Seedlings are sourced from the local area and replanted in areas where the mangroves are being depleted. The project provides some income for local young people and helps to raise community awareness that the mangroves are best left where they are (rather than being chopped down for firewood).
As your funds are going offshore we are unable to provide you with a receipt for tax purposes.
Through the ARO project we support environmental initiatives that creative positive outcomes for young people and communities in New Zealand and the Pacific
Each seedling costs NZ$3.50, this covers the cost of finding the seed, nurturing it, and then planting it out. $2.50 of this goes to the young people who do the work.
We also want to be able to provide a small income for Roy (approx $400/month)
Please get behind our final mangrove planting for 2022 27 October 2022
We are seeking support for a final planting of 500 of the seedlings they have been propagating. The seeds are being gathered, propagated and then planted by the young people and we purchase them for NZ$2.50 each (total cost NZ$1,250). We would also like to make a contribution to their end of year Christmas celebration (boat trip and picnic) as a thank you for the team of young people involved (NZ$500).
