Kawhia on the west coast of the King Country region of NZ has one of the most beautiful ocean beaches in New Zealand, but it needs your help
Waikato
About once a month for over 3 years a dedicated group of local volunteers, which includes up to 25 kids at a time, have been going around to the Kawhia ocean beach with their borrowed bikes and trailers to pick up all the plastics and other bits of rubbish, that have been washed in by the prevailing westerly winds and tides, or dropped by visitors...
The kids are taught to take this service very seriously, as it not only could save the unnecessary suffering of marine life that could swallow these plastics if the stuff refloated back out, but it also teaches respect and appreciation for our natural environment, and pride in keeping their community treasure tidy and clean of unnatural rubbish...Over the past years scores of local and visiting kids have been involved in this educational experience of taking care of this 10 k's of pristine beach, and well over 20 tons of rubbish have been picked up and disposed of in this time...
However every month to do this job of caring for our environment and wildlife and providing this valuable nature experience for the kids, we've had to often borrow other peoples bikes and trailers, which can often put us in an unreliable and difficult situation...
We believe it's well overdue that we source our own bikes and trailers (two of each) to continue what we believe has tremendous positive value, and what can also be utilised for volunteer beach patrols, wildlife protection missions, and supporting our other outdoor programmes for youth...
So we are asking for support from anyone that appreciates the work that we do to please contribute a little bit towards getting the necessary equipment needed...
And please follow our adventures on our listed FB page:https://www.facebook.com/oceanbeachcare/
We're involved because building strong and caring kids, and teaching them to respect and appreciate our natural world is what we have a passion for...
The purpose of our trust is to educate and train kids and rangatahi (youth), and in particular, ‘at risk’ rangatahi, in job skills, work ethics, self-esteem and self-confidence, by using the natural environment and culture, to develop respect, appreciation and pride for their hapori (community) and our natural environment, while using outdoor activities as metaphors to explore and improve attitudes, and live out their God-given potential through the challenge of adventure.
