Regional highlights in generosity
"New Zealanders' generosity never ceases to amaze me. The spirit of giving is alive in every community, from our largest cities to our smallest towns," said Lythan Chapman, CEO of Givealittle. "This year’s $28 million in donations is a testament to the kindness and community strength that makes New Zealand so special."
Auckland leads the way in total contributions, with over $13.8 million raised. This reflects the significant support Aucklanders provide to causes.
Wellingtonians and Cantabrians are not far behind, with contributions of $4.7 million and $2.7 million respectively. Both regions exemplify strong community support and are vital contributors to New Zealand’s giving landscape.
Gisborne stands out with an impressive $100 per person donated on average, making it one of the most generous regions relative to its population size. This shows that even smaller communities can have an outsized impact when it comes to charitable giving.
The Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions have also made significant contributions, with $1.4 million and $1.6 million respectively.
The Spirit of Generosity Across New Zealand
"We often talk about big cities leading the way, but the truth is that smaller regions are just as generous, if not more so, when you look at giving per person," Chapman added. "It’s the collective spirit that truly powers this country. Whether it’s $5 or $500, every single donation matters and makes a difference."
The data reveals that generosity knows no bounds in New Zealand—every region has contributed meaningfully. The high average donations per person show the community spirit that runs through our country. Smaller regions like Nelson demonstrate this beautifully, with high per capita giving that reflects strong local bonds and the willingness to help.
Regions such as Auckland, Wellington, and Canterbury provide a large share of total donations, underlining their economic capacity and the charitable spirit of their residents. Yet, the impact of smaller regions is equally inspiring—their contributions often match or exceed those of larger regions on a per-person basis, highlighting the shared values and deep connections found across New Zealand.
As we approach the festive season, let these contributions remind us of what makes New Zealand truly special—our collective desire to give, support, and uplift one another. Thank you, Aotearoa, for your incredible generosity. Let’s continue building a community of kindness, one donation at a time.
