Givealittle Generosity Report FY2024

November 2024
Givealittle's Generosity Report for FY2024 has been released, and it's full of interesting stats and stories of what Kiwi's have achieved this last year. Of course we cannot fit every page into our report - but we try and do our best to reflect the accomplishments, mahi, and love that we are fortunate enough to help Kiwis share everyday.

We've also recently hit a major milestone - $300M in total generosity since we were launched 16 years ago. Find out more about this here

Key Figures from FY2024
This year’s report highlights several achievements across our platform:

  • 391,000 donations were made last year, totaling $33.1 million.
  • 11,100+ fundraising pages were created, with 2,300 dedicated to supporting charities.
  • While total donations to charities amounted to $8.1 million, a slight decline from last year, the number of registered charities on Givealittle grew by 200, now totaling over 3,700.
  • Schools, too, saw a boost, raising $372,700, a 7% increase from FY2023.

What are people fundraising for:
The dominant category people raised funds for was health, with 2,407 pages (21.6% of all pages). Community was second, with 1,487 pages (13.4%). Animals – 1,043 pages (9.4%). There were 882 pages for Challenges; 868 pages for Sports; 674 pages for Kiwi Kids; and 646 pages for Education purposes. Many hundreds more pages were created for purposes such as New Zealanders, Disaster, Creative, Issues, Environment, and more.

Despite the pressures of the rising cost of living, Kiwis’ commitment to giving remains strong. Though the overall figure is down from last year’s $43.5 million total, this can be attributed to Kiwi's responding to the catastrophic flooding and cyclone that occured in January and February of last year. This year’s numbers show resilience in the face of financial challenges, demonstrating that New Zealanders are always ready to help, whether in times of crisis or in supporting the everyday needs of communities.

The Power of Small Donations
Givealittle’s CEO, Lythan Chapman, summed up the essence of our platform, saying: “Our $300 million milestone represents what Kiwis have done for one another over 16 years. As our brand suggests, giving in little increments can add up to something very valuable and can change lives for the better in all kinds of ways.

From helping individuals with medical bills to supporting schools and charitable organizations, every donation, no matter how small, contributes to something greater. The generosity seen across the platform reaffirms our nation’s shared values of kindness and community support.

Stories of Impact
Behind every dollar raised on Givealittle is a story of people helping others in meaningful ways. Here are just a few highlights from this year’s report:

Micky Huriwaka, a beloved youth golf coach from Ōpōtiki, needed a new vehicle to transport his tamariki and their gear. Thanks to 434 donors, Micky raised nearly $30,000 in just four weeks, allowing him to continue his important work.

The Whangārei Native Bird Recovery Centre received over $50,000 from Givealittle donors, contributing to the $140,000 total needed to keep the center running. This facility, which rescues and rehabilitates over 1,200 birds annually, plays a vital role in New Zealand’s conservation efforts.

Motatau School's Aquabots team, a group of four talented students passionate about underwater robotics, raised $42,205 to travel to Washington DC and represent New Zealand in a global competition. The support of 586 donors helped these young minds share their knowledge with the world.

The Westpac Chopper Appeal Bike Ride raised over $107,000 for the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust, with participants like journalist Paddy Gower braving freezing conditions to complete a 235-kilometre ride. Paddy alone raised nearly $6,700 in just 12 days, showing that Kiwi generosity thrives even in the toughest conditions.

Looking Ahead: Enhancing the Givealittle Experience
As we celebrate these incredible achievements, we’re also looking to the future. Over the next year, we’ll be rolling out platform enhancements to make giving even more seamless and impactful. Our Generosity Generator Masterclass, which teaches charities and individuals the ins and outs of crowdfunding, has so far exceeded our expectations with over 200 enrolments in the first month alone, and will continue to empower Kiwi charities and community groups to run successful campaigns.

We’re committed to ensuring that every fundraiser and donor has the best experience possible on Givealittle, whether through innovative features like matched giving, payroll giving, or enhanced privacy and responsiveness.

Lastly, we thank you Aotearoa.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who has donated, fundraised, or supported a cause through Givealittle. Here’s to another year of kindness, generosity, and aroha.

Ngā mihi nui,

The Givealittle Team
