Matt Williams has an opportunity to be part of a New Zealand team that’s about to make history, but he needs your help.
Auckland
Matt, a Sports Coordinator at YMCA Massey, was recently selected by Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) to represent New Zealand on the world stage in physically adapted rugby league. It will be the team’s inaugural appearance at the Emerging Nations World Championship. Playing rugby league is no mean feat for Matt who has overcome adversity on his way to the world sporting stage.
Two and a half years ago, Matt was in a serious car accident and suffered a brain injury. Matt’s determination, coupled with years of rehabilitation and a never give up attitude has allowed him to get to where he is today. Each week, Matt, who is gradually getting better, referees junior rugby league games.
The Emerging Nations World Championship in Sydney is an opportunity for Matt and his team mates to realise their potential. Their achievement will no doubt inspire other physically disabled athletes to never give up on their dreams.
After taking home a silver medal at the Commonwealth Championships in February, Matt and the team have been working hard towards their goal of winning gold in Sydney. He now has an amazing opportunity to represent NZ for a second time, but he needs your help.
At YMCA North we build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. We are here for our local neighbourhoods and deliver services which empower youth, improve health, and strengthen community.
Each player needs $1,000 to attend the event. Funds raised will help Matt get to Sydney and closer to a gold medal.
