Infrastructure project to house more heritage carriages undercover out of the harsh sea air of Paekakariki
Wellington, Kapiti Coast District
Steam Incorporated is home to the largest and most varied collection of passenger carriages. Now totaling 15 operational vehicles and a passenger capacity of over 600 people, our carriages are the mainstay of our passenger operations.
As we look forward to the future, the society is investing in the preservation of our assets and focusing on how to best utilise our depot at Paekakariki. The first phase of this work was established some years ago in the construction of our carriage shed that proudly houses the operational fleet as well as storage of other assets. We are now looking to the long awaited second part of that project, a second storage building to house four more carriages undercover.
This job has been on the drawing board for many years. After much hard work, we have recently got resource consent for this project. When we applied for consent over two years ago, the society had money set aside for the building, however with delays in the consenting process and increased costs associated with the build as a result of inflation, we are $130k short of the final total.
The new shed will enable four more carriages to be stored under cover as well as giving us a dedicated space where a carriage can be overhauled & maintained without having to be moved around to make room for other projects.
We are an incorporated society based at Paekakariki on the Kapiti Coast. Formed nearly fifty years ago, we are devoted to the restoration of steam and diesel locomotives plus heritage carriages that we regularly operate on the main line.
Funds raised through our Givealittle campaign will go towards the fitout of the shed, namely trackwork, concrete flooring, electrical work, plumbing, and associating tooling to facilitate the conservation and preservation of our historical assets
