Riding for a Reason in Hotties 100 - Cycling 100kms!
Auckland
To be honest I am a little terrified.....
I have never cycled in an organised ride / race before, I have only just purchased a proper road bike with clip in pedal thingys and promptly fell off onto concrete at a intersection. Cycling 100kms will probably take a good 5-6 hours for a beginner like me, which sounds like an incredibly long time....
But despite all of this, I am determined.
Determined to do this because of course this is a cause so very close to my heart.
I am the founder and CEO of Unicorn Foundation New Zealand which was formally established around 3 years ago. I set up Unicorn because this cancer runs throughout my family and I was frustrated by the lack of resources there were for patients diagnosed with these tumours. I have had several surgeries over the years but thankfully right now I am in good health which means I have time to try to make a difference for others who have to deal with this disease.
I am very lucky to work with a wonderful bunch of people who make up the Unicorn team and each of them are also very passionate about improving the status quo here in NZ.
Through Unicorn, I have had the pleasure of spending time with amazing patients and their families touched by this cancer but sadly it affects way too many people. Around one New Zealander is diagnosed everyday and the best treatment isn't available or funded here in NZ - this has to change.
If you can, please support our efforts. Every dollar raised makes a huge difference for a small charity like ours. We not only advocate and support patients but we also work closely with medical researchers and have been lobbying to improve access and funding for the treatments needed here.
Awareness of this cancer is needed, so thank you for taking the time to read about us. Hopefully I will get to share some photos crossing the finish line ! Wish me luck!
xx Siobhan

Auckland is rad. 21 June 2016
This photo is me grinning on northwestern cycle way - highly recommend the Auckland cycleways, they are seriously incredible. I am grateful for signing up for this ride as I may not have ever discovered these little hidden gems around Auckland otherwise. I can see why people get hooked on this sport as its like a new adventure each time I get on my bike discovering new nooks and seeing the city from a different angle.
Clocked up some Kms on my bike over the weekend, over 30km on Saturday and my personal record of 63km on Sunday, (it took me all day).
less than 2 weeks to go and still feeling nervous but a bit more confident and so so grateful for all the amazing support from you all.
Thank you to everyone who has kindly donated. I hate asking because I know I am always asking for stuff for Unicorn, but I promise you that every dollar donated is cherished and spent only on things that will ultimately help patients with NETs. We are small with low overheads and know how important every dollar is.
Thanks again for your support, I really really appreciate it.
Much love, Siobhan xx
