Winter feed for furry friends in need

$3,782 of $5,000 goal
Given by 60 generous donors in 25 days

All raised funds are going to be used to keep the animals warm, fed and happy all winter long.

The Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary is a safe and sustainable space which rehabilitates and re-homes abused, injured and neglected animals.

We are currently taking care of over 200 animals. All come from different backgrounds of neglect and abuse. The project relies chiefly on volunteer workers.

Can you help us fill hungry animal bellies this winter?

This year hay has been hard to come by with little spring rain followed by a long hot summer. We have managed to buy in just half our hay supply, and desperately need your help to get all the animals through winter in great shape. Right now bales of hay retail for around $15 each, which is $5 more than last year.

This year we are hoping you will help us raise $5,000 to buy hay, straw, grain and feed pellets.

The Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary is mainly funded by the money raised through our Opportunity for Animals op shops in Wellington and Otaki. In winter our sales usually fall, making it difficult to raise the resources needed to get through winter.

We are a registered charity, and all donations are tax deductible.

The sanctuary seek to support both human and animal rights, and opposes all forms of oppression. We are pro-feminist, and anti-racist; we oppose sexism, inequality and environmental destruction. We acknowledge local iwi and local hapū as tāngata whenua. We are a space that is vegan for humans.

Every dollar helps! Thank you for your support. We couldn't do it without you!

About us

The Black Sheep rehabilitates and re-homes abused, injured and neglected non-human animals. We support animal rights and animal protection, and our main aim is to provide a safe haven for animals, as well as outreach and education in our community. Right now, several full-time caretakers, with support from dedicated part-time volunteers and WWOOFers care for over two hundred animals (pigs, goats, sheep, roosters, geese, cows, horses, dogs, cats, ducks, hedgehogs, geese, rabbits, rats, turkeys and many others) at Ōtaki Forks, an hour's drive north of Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. Although in more normal times our fundraising shops cover the sanctuary mortgage, we depend on community support for all animal care costs.

Our particular focus is to take in neglected, mistreated, and abandoned farm animals. We offer a refuge where they can live out their natural lives in peace and security, in the company of others of their kind. Where possible we rehome to loving forever homes, but there are many high-needs animals who will live with us permanently. We're run by the Animal Protection Society, a registered charity, and we're hoping you can help us survive.

The Black Sheep animals are loving their hay!   17 July 2021

What a wonderful response to our winter feed appeal – while we didn’t quite make the Give-a-little target, other donations (including hay donated directly) and fundraising have enabled us to buy in enough supplies. We thought you might like this photos of Fanny enjoying her food, along with our heartfelt thanks for your support.
