Winter Hay for Orzo and Mārie!

$4,377 of $10,000 goal
Given by 44 generous donors in 10 weeks

The rescued residents of the Black Sheep need your help! We are seeking donations to help us purchase extra food and bedding for the winter.

Otaki, Wellington

The Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary needs your help as we head into the coldest months of the year!

We strive to give our rescued animals the best care possible, and throughout winter our costs sadly soar. With many of our animals ageing or experiencing chronic health challenges, providing good-quality feed is essential for their wellbeing. Unfortunately, there is far less grass available for grazing, so we rely on supplementary sustenance for our goats, sheep, cows, ponies, and bunnies. The crisp temperatures mean extra straw bedding in the animals’ houses and heating pads for our more vulnerable pals - wonderfully cosy, but costly too.

So, while we are working hard towards financial sustainability with our opshops and animal sponsorships, we greet winter’s first weeks and find ourselves in need of a little extra help. We are so thankful to all who have supported us throughout the years, staying afloat due to the kindness of so many. We are hopeful and determined to make our way through to spring stronger than ever!

Now, let’s say hello to your fundraiser ambassadors!

Orzo the lamb was born on a farm, with only three and a half legs. Thankfully, the farmer got in touch with us and asked if we'd be willing to give him the extra time and attention that he requires. We very happily agreed!

Mārie was found alone huddled next to a highway barrier when she was a month old, sopping wet in the stormy weather. Her kind rescuers were able to keep her safe until she could be relocated to us.

About us

The Black Sheep supports animal rights and animal protection, providing a safe haven for about 100 previously abused, injured and neglected animals (pigs, goats, sheep, roosters, cows, horses, ducks, geese, rabbits, turkeys and more) near Ōtaki Forks.

Use of funds

Hay, pellets, grain, and straw! Lower temperatures mean our animals expend more energy staying warm, so more sustenance is needed. The grass is also in short supply, so extra hay will be essential. Straw bedding will make the cold nights dry and warm.
