Help Save the Lives of our 'Garage Kitten' Litter!

These 4 kittens require surgery to save their lives due to a serious condition which can cause painful ulceration of the eyes and blindness

Auckland

Gingernut (aka G-Nut), Blackdrop, Smudge and Simba were rescued from a garage in Avondale at 5 weeks of age. It was soon discovered that there was something wrong with the kittens, and they were taken to an animal eye specialist on 4th December.

Blackdrop, Smudge and Simba were found to have upper lid agenesis (incomplete development or absence of the upper eyelids) and reduced or minimal tear production. This causes trichiasis, where the eyelashes are positioned abnormally and grow towards the eye, causing painful ulcers on the surface of the eye which can lead to blindness.

Gingernut's condition is more serious, with minimal tear production, severe upperlid agenesis, and anterior segment dysgenersis (abnormal development of the tissues of the anterior segment of the eye). He already has poor vision, and will need significant surgery and long term therapy.

Blackdrop, Smudge and Simba can be treated with cryosurgery to minimize the abnormal eyelash growth, as well as lubrication for their eyes. Gingernut is facing the removal of both his eyes due to the severity of his condition - while euthanasia is another option, we believe that he can adapt well to the loss of his sight, and be able to live a long and healthy life following his recovery.

However we need to find the money to get these kittens treated and save their lives. Cryosurgery isn't cheap, and we have been given an estimate of up to around $800 per kitten. We are fundraising for the costs of their specialist consultation ($200), treatment for all 4 of these kittens, and the estimated cost of their care including desexing, microchipping and vaccination prior to their adoption. If you can spare a contribution towards saving these little kittens, it would be very much appreciated!
