AML/CFT and Givealittle

Because Givealittle is used for transferring money from one party to another, we are classed as a “reporting entity”, and have obligations under the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Act 2009.

Our obligations

A full description of the obligations placed on us, as a reporting entity, can be found here.

We are required to perform Customer Due Diligence (CDD) on parties that we enter into a business relationship with, including all Payees that we pay funds to.

If the Payee is an Individual then we will do CDD on them, personally. If the Payee is an organisation, such as a Charity, School, Business, or other Group, then we are required to perform CDD on any people that have "Effective Control".

We may also, at our discretion, elect to do CDD on other people associated with a page, including a particular donor or member, or beneficiary, etc.

What is Customer Due Diligence (CDD)?

CDD is the process of verifying your identity to a level where we have confidence that we know who we are doing business with. Based on this knowledge we will determine whether it is appropriate to continue with the relationship.

Electronic verification

Typically this identity verification involves comparing your identity and address details against a third-party database like New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) driver licence database, or the Department of Internal Affairs’ Passport database.

Your address can also be electronically verified against various databases such as LINZ, Companies Office or Credit Bureaus. Further information on electronic verification can be found here.

Manual verification

Sometimes you might not be able to provide a valid New Zealand driver licence or passport number. In this case we’ll need you to provide a verified copy of some other official document that proves your identity. Full information on manual verification and acceptable documents can be found here.

Manual verification of your address involves you sending us a recent official document, such as:

  • Power, water, or phone bill
  • Government or Government department document (e.g. IRD tax notice or certificate)
  • Local council notification/demand (e.g. rates bill)
  • Letter from an NZ Educational Institution

These documents must be less than 3 months old.

Photographic proof

As a further check that the person submitting the information is the owner of the documents, you are asked to take some photos of yourself and of your ID. We have partnered with Verifi Identity Services to allow you to do this. It’s quick, easy and secure.

You can opt out of taking photos at the time you submit your details (for example, if the device you are on doesn’t support it), but we will likely have to get back to you to complete this step before payments can be approved.

Politically Exposed Persons (PEP) check

We are also required to check whether your name is on the Dow Jones Watchlist of Politically Exposed Persons. This is a record of people who have held public office, and those close to them, with the rationale being that these persons are at increased risk of having ill-gotten gains to launder.

Further information about PEP Checks at Givealittle can be found here.
